According to Yonhap News,

As the enforcement decree of the special act on the Relocation of Military Air Bases and Support Therefor was enacted, the relocation project of Gwangju airbase is expected to start in earnest.

The National Assembly passed two special acts on new Daegu-Gyeongbuk airport and relocation of Gwangju airbase on Apr 13. The special act on Gwangju airbase stipulates relocation of the air base, support plans for the area where the airbase is currently located and its environs after the relocation. This act carries significance in that it clarifies supports from state and local governments to ensure a smooth relocation of the airbase.

It also contains a clause that states required supports for the current area of the air base after deliberations in a support committee.

After the relocation, the area can be turned into a special zone such as a special tourist zone, a special architectural district, a free economic zone, a regulatory free zone, a special economic zone for regional development policy, or a smart city specialized complex.

"I feel gratitude to have the passage of those two acts completed as we promised." said assembly man Song Kap-seok, and "The plan of Gwangju air base relocation, which has been held back for 25 years is finally put into action in a full swing."
