According to Yonhap News,

Gwangju-si is speeding up its move to emerge as a "Korean-style Artificial Intelligence (AI) Valley."

Gwangju-si held its first AI Industry Committee meeting this year on August 21.

The committee is a legal body based on the Gwangju AI Industry Promotion and Support Ordinance.

The committee members shared the progress of the first phase of the AI integrated complex establishment project and deliberated on subsidies for attracting companies.

In particular, the committee discussed the direction of the second stage of the project, including the realization of an AI demonstration city and the citizens' experience, among others.

The committee members agreed that the vision of Korean-style AI valley should be realized through the advancement of the second stage of the project with the first stage right on track (the first phase of the AI complex establishment project is scheduled from 2020 to 2024). The first phase of the project contains the establishment of infrastructure including the world's top 10 state-of-the-art artificial intelligence data center and demonstration equipment and creation of industrial ecosystem in the 3rd high-tech district of Buk-gu, Gwangju.

The data center is slated to open in October this year while the demonstration and start-up buildings will be completed in 2024.
