According to Yonhap News,

On October 15, Gwangju-si announced that it selected five companies as "G-Unicorn", who will get support in thier overseas expansion, in order to foster unicorn companies (giant startups) representing the region.

Gwangju-si selected five start-ups with outstanding technology and growth potential in August, and has provided up to KRW 200 million in commercialization funds, global proof of concept (PoC) opportunities, and support in attraction of investment, and open innovation by large corporations.

The city will also provide an opportunity to demonstrate how the technology possessed by Korean startups will be applied to the business, in cooperation with global companies based in Seattle, to facilitate their entry to the US market.

Gwangju-si also plans to support participation fees for overseas exhibitions such as CES 2024, the largest consumer electronics fair in the US to help startups develop overseas markets and strengthen marketing.

Companies selected as G-Unicorn this year includ: SOS Lab, a fixed LiDAR development and production company for vehicles; IntFlow, an AI deep-tech company that provides non-contact livestock analysis technology; Cheomdanlab, a silicon nitride ball manufacturing company using waste silicon; Forel, an energy-saving cooling material technology provider, and; Studio Button, a global animation content planning and production company.

SOS Lab won the grand prize at this year's G-Unicorn competition, and possesses the largest number of LiDAR technology patents in Korea.

An official from Gwangju-si government said, "we will continue to discover and support promising local companies and create a virtuous cycle so that these companies can contribute to the local ecosystem"
