Last year, Gwangju-si set the record of foreign direct investment (FDI).

According to Gwangju-si on January 9, Gwangju's reported amount recorded USD 379 million (19 cases) in the recently published FDI trend of 2023 by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

Gwangju's FDI amount has skyrocketed after showing a steday growth trend with KRW 30 million (16 cases) in 2021, KRW 60 million (41 cases) in 2022.

It was the 5th largest amount among special and metropolitan cities, following Seoul, Ulsan, Incheon and Busan.

By industry, it can be divided by 1 in electricity and electronics, 4 in energy, 4 in food manufacturing, 1 in R&D, and 9 in other industries.

By country, it was US, Singapore, Japan, and Denmark.

Gwangju-si explained that the surge in FDI was largely attributed to the decision of Amkor Korea, choosing Korea as a global base for high-tech semiconductors materials, parts, and equipment, scaling up investments amount.

An official from Gwangju-si said that "Gwangju created a favorable environment for investment due to designation as the national industrial complex for future cars (1 million pyeong), and attraction of high-tech materials, parts, and equipment specialized complex," adding that "we aim to attract 5 anchor companies and 200 innovative companies on the back of AI and future cars."
