According to Yonhap News,

Gwangju's mayor said on January 10 that "we will turn Gwangju into a leading model in Korea as an AI demonstration city by creating an urban-scale demonstration environment and infrastructure including AI specialized data center."

The mayor visited the National AI Data Center in Gwangju Buk-gu Cheomdan 3 district as part of 'Policy Picnic", the new year's first policy field communication event, checking the overall policy.

He observed the facilities that began service in earnest since November last year and construction sites for demonstration and startup buildings scheduled to be completed this year.

This policy picnic was prepared to discuss with the AI Industry Convergence Project Group and NHN about the measures to successfully complete the first phase of the AI cluster and realize the 2nd phase demonstration city.

Participants all voiced the need to speed up the 2nd phase of the project using the center as AI companies across the country are closely watching Gwangju, seeking for collaboration.

The center was built by mixing high-performance computing (HPC) with computing capability of 20 petaflops (PF: 1,000 trillion computing process per second) and graphic processing unit (GPU) cloud with 68.5 petaflops, adding up to 88.5 PF in total and 107 petabytes (PB) storage. "
