According to Yonhap News,

The 2025 Gwangju Design Biennale opened its 65-day journey with an opening ceremony on August 29.

The ceremony, held on the outdoor special stage of the Gwangju Biennale Exhibition Hall, was attended by approximately 500 people, including Gwangju Mayor Kang Ki-jung, key figures from the art world, and citizens.

The event began with a performance by a marching band, crossing the plaza in front of the exhibition hall.

Following the opening remarks by Yoon Bum-mo, President of the Gwangju Biennale Foundation, a welcoming speech by Mayor Kang Ki-jung, and an exhibition explanation by Chief Director Choi Soo-shin, the Gwangju Inclusive Design Manifesto was declared, promoting the value of 'inclusivity.'

After the declaration, a performance was staged, featuring a diverse group of performers of different ages, genders, cultures, and abilities, who played various instruments for 30 minutes.

On the 360-degree open stage that utilized the exhibition hall plaza, live performances with traditional Korean and Western wind instruments, as well as movements by street dancers and citizen dancers, visually represented the journey towards inclusivity.

The 11th Gwangju Design Biennale this year conveys the value and significance of inclusive design under the theme "You, the World: How Design Embraces Humanity."

The biennale will be held from August 30 to November 2, with 429 participating artists from 19 countries showcasing 163 works.

From small everyday items like potato peelers and cleaning tools to structures addressing climate change and rising sea levels, apps connecting marginalized groups like the LGBTQ+ community and immigrants, the exhibition presents a variety of perspectives and methodologies to address common challenges.
