According to Yonhap News,

On December 2nd, Gwangju-si held the "AI Semiconductor Innovation Strategy Council for the Establishment of the National NPU (Neural Processing Unit) Computing Center in Gwangju" at the Glad Hotel in Yeouido, Seoul, where AI companies discussed the ways to establish the NPU computing center.

The council was attended by Gwangju's Mayor Kang Ki-jung, members of Parliament, as well as 12 key NPU companies. They exchanged opinions on Gwangju's competitiveness as the location for the NPU computing center and ways to improve the NPU ecosystem.

Gwangju-si is promoting the establishment of the NPU computing center as part of its strategy to become a city for AI demonstration. The NPU computing center is a facility specialized in large-scale AI inference and learning, enabling low-power, high-efficiency AI operations.

During the meeting, issues in the domestic NPU industry were raised, such as the lack of domestic NPU demonstration environments, insufficient public NPU computing infrastructure, and the need for public demand to form an initial market, highlighting the necessity of key facilities.

CEO of HyperAccel emphasized, "With abundant power, talent, and a local government's strong commitment to attracting the Center, Gwangju is the optimal location to realize sovereign AI in the era of inference."

CEO of Furiosa AI also stated, "If the government confidently invests and Gwangju becomes the testing ground for companies, it will lay the groundwork for them to grow into global companies."

CEO of ASICLAND explained, "If the NPU computing center is built in Gwangju, it will create the foundation for large-scale demonstration and utilization of domestic chips."

Gwangju's mayor concluded, "Through the NPU computing center and the regulatory-free city, Gwangju will establish itself as a hub for domestic NPU demonstration and verification innovation and lead the commercialization of domestic AI semiconductors."
