[GWANGJU = NEWSIS] By Lee Chang-woo = Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) and the Korea Fabless Industry Association (KFIA) have embarked on a full-cycle collaboration—spanning design, packaging, and proof-of-concept (PoC) validation—to strengthen the competitiveness of Korea’s artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductor industry.

GIST announced on the 13th that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with KFIA on the 12th at Oryong Hall in Buk-gu, Gwangju, to jointly build a comprehensive AI semiconductor ecosystem.

The agreement focuses on combining GIST’s AI and semiconductor research capabilities with KFIA’s industry-centered network to ensure that university research outcomes are translated into practical technologies and products in the industrial field.

Under the partnership, the two organizations plan to identify joint research and development (R&D) projects, develop customized training programs based on industry demand, and jointly participate in projects linked with central and local governments, in a phased manner.

Through these efforts, they aim to foster Gwangju–Jeonnam as a core southern hub for AI semiconductors and back-end processing.

GIST President Im Ki-cheol said, “Through cooperation with the Korea Fabless Industry Association, we will do our utmost to enhance the global competitiveness of Korea’s AI semiconductor industry and support the southern region’s growth into a semiconductor cluster.”

KFIA Chairman Kim Kyung-soo said, “Advanced process validation infrastructure is one of the biggest challenges facing fabless companies,” adding that “this collaboration will accelerate the securing of core technologies and the training of talent tailored to industry needs.”

Prior to the signing ceremony, Rep. Min Hyung-bae of the Democratic Party of Korea and the Gwangju–Jeonnam Integrated Semiconductor Forum Preparatory Committee jointly hosted the “Gwangju–Jeonnam Semiconductor Industry Ecosystem Building Strategy Forum.”

Industry, academia, and research institute experts attended the forum to discuss strategies for developing Gwangju–Jeonnam into a hub for system semiconductors and back-end processing.
