According to Yonhap News,
(Gwangju = Yonhap News) Reporter Yeo Woon-chang = The Gwangju AI Education Center, a dedicated hub for artificial intelligence education for both students and citizens, officially opened its doors on the 28th with a ceremony held at its headquarters in Buk-gu, Gwangju.
Under the slogan "Bridging the Digital Education Gap to Open the Era of Universal AI Education," the ceremony highlighted the vision of Gwangju's education system, where access to AI learning is considered a fundamental right for all.
Following the opening ceremony, Dr. Al-Hassan Yasin, a professor at Johns Hopkins University, led a talk concert on "The Necessity of Basic AI Education." During the session, he emphasized, "Public education must ensure that all students can enjoy the benefits of AI technology without being left behind."
Attendees toured the exhibition and experience zones on the first and second floors, which feature content aligned with the region's strategic industries—autonomous driving, energy, and healthcare—and experienced the center's cutting-edge AI-based educational infrastructure firsthand.
The Gwangju AI Education Center aims to create a collaborative AI education ecosystem involving universities and the local community. It will operate various programs for students, teaching staff, parents, and citizens. The center was established with a total investment of KRW 40.7 billion, covering a gross floor area of 9,129 square meters (one underground level and three above-ground levels).
The center plans to offer a wide range of activities, including:
- Weekday AI programs for elementary and middle school students
- Student club projects and vacation AI convergence courses
- Operation of an AI Information Gifted Education Institute
- Robot SW Festivals and AI talk concerts for citizens
With its opening, the center is expected to serve as a key educational and experiential space utilized by over 30,000 people annually.
"The AI Education Center is a space that realizes human-centered AI education rather than just technology-centered training," said Superintendent Lee Jeong-seon. "We will strive to help students correctly understand artificial intelligence and cultivate the competencies needed to thrive in a future society."
