According to Yonhap News,
(Gwangju = Yonhap News) Reporter Jang Deok-jong = Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 10th that it has generated non-tax revenue by selling "Renewable Energy Certificates" produced from solar power generation facilities.
The city earned KRW 60 million in non-tax revenue by selling 853 Renewable Energy Certificates (REC), acquired through city-funded projects, on the Korea Power Exchange spot market.
This volume combines 844 RECs secured from the "Citizen Sunshine Power Plant Construction Support Project" and 9 RECs from the "Soundproof Wall/Tunnel Solar Technology Development and Demonstration Project."
An REC is a certificate proving that electricity was produced using renewable energy facilities such as solar power and is issued to power generation business operators. As it can be traded separately from electricity sales revenue, the system allows the public sector to generate additional income after investing in renewable energy.
RECs have a validity period of three years after issuance, and their asset value expires if they are not sold within this timeframe.
Accordingly, Gwangju Metropolitan City has efficiently realized asset values by periodically pursuing public sales before the expiration of the certificates.
The funds secured through this sale will be reallocated to public interest budgets, such as support for energy-vulnerable groups and the expansion of renewable energy, to be returned to the local community.
The city expects to generate approximately KRW 2 billion in non-tax revenue by 2030 through the acquisition of RECs.
"This sale of Renewable Energy Certificates is an example of increasing administrative efficiency by actively managing public property rather than simply holding it," said Son Doo-young, Director of the Artificial Intelligence Office of Gwangju Metropolitan City. "We will create a virtuous cycle in which public assets created by citizens' taxes are returned through the dissemination of renewable energy and energy welfare."
