According to Newsis,
(Gwangju = Newsis) Reporter Ryu Hyung-geun – The Pyeongdong General Industrial Complex located in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, has been officially designated as a 'Specialized Welding Root Industry Zone.'
Gwangju City announced on the 17th that the Pyeongdong General Industrial Complex area was selected for the '2026 Specialized Root Industry Zone Designation and Support Project' hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources (MOTIR).
The Pyeongdong Industrial Complex spans an area of 329,829 square meters (approximately 100,000 pyeong). In collaboration with the Korea Welding and Joining Industry Association, Gwangju City will invest a total of KRW 129.4 billion over a five-year period starting from 2027 to push forward joint innovation support projects for marketing and prototype manufacturing.
Furthermore, technical support will be rendered to ensure that the 552 root enterprises stationed within the Pyeongdong Industrial Complex can actively respond to AI Transformation (AX) and Digital Transformation (DX).
To resolve the chronic shortage of skilled design personnel and difficulties in recruiting new talent, the city plans to establish a stable supply of necessary on-site skilled personnel. This will be achieved by continuously operating advanced technology training for current employees and tailored education for the unemployed in connection with institutions such as Chosun University's Department of Welding and Joining Engineering.
Plans are also underway to build infrastructures including Research and Development (R&D) projects for next-generation advanced joining technologies and welding quality uation/reliability technology development, the establishment of a Welding Components Manufacturing Cooperation Center, and an AI Joining Technology Performance uation and Certification Center.
In addition, linked initiatives will be pursued, such as the technology development of autonomous manufacturing systems for electronic components, the construction of a demonstration foundation for electric vehicle (EV) battery joining technologies, and the establishment of a Root Industry Process Advancement Support Center.
Son Du-young, Director General of the Artificial Intelligence Industry Bureau, stated, "With the designation of the Pyeongdong Industrial Complex as a specialized zone, we will restructure the root enterprises from being processing-centered into a technology-intensive smart manufacturing and AI-advanced framework." The official added, "Once the AI-based quality prediction system and factory automation are implemented, we anticipate significant productivity improvements and reductions in defect rates."
