Gwangju Mayor Gang Un-tae was awarded the grand prize for the 2012 Global Korea Economy Leader in mid-November.

"Mayor Gang demonstrated the great leadership in developing Gwangju Metropolitan City into an export-oriented high-tech city," said Lee Geon-heui, commissioner of the selection committee for Global Korea Economy Leader.

"It seemed that Gwangju's aggressive efforts to create quality jobs and nurture strategic industries are highly recognized," said Mayor Gang. "I'd like to appreciate 6,000 city officials for their contribution."

The Global Korea Economy Leader event was co-organized by Korea Joongang Daily and the Economist and supported by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy.
