Ulsan city to pump KRW 7 billion into a plan building out an industry base for hydrogen economy
The city of Ulsan and Ulsan Technopark rolled out a plan to build out an industrial base inside the local industry cluster in support of making hydrogen economy thrive. The plan aims to go in line with a roadmap, announced by the government of South Korea last year, for developing hydrogen economy, as part of national agenda to form an ecosystem, which encompasses all types of services and solutions for hydrogen economy from production, storage, transport and even commercial applications by putting greater emphasis on two main industries; hydrogen vehicles and fuel cells as a driving force to lead the future growth.
As Ulsan city’s project to further advance local economy, which centers mainly on hydrogen technologies, was selected as one of national initiatives to turn the country’s industry base “smarter” led by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE), the city government was allowed to shape a business “innovation” cluster in Ulsan Technopark to spur the growth of hydrogen economy.
For the purpose of helping the existing industries remain more competent and exploring the new growth engines, authorities will pump as much as KRW 7 billion into the project. Ulsan Technopark is reported to take the leadership role in orchestrating the initiative, partnering with three sponsors; Korea Institute of Industrial Technology (KITECH), Korea Testing & Research Institute (KTR) and Ulsan University. They’ll build 13 technical assessment systems to monitor fuel cell electrochemical performance, widely applicable to almost all segments in hydrogen technologies, while building out an infrastructure for technical support. Apart from these abovementioned plans, they’ll run an HR program to foster industry specialists to work with.
