According to Yonhap News,

Ulsan-si announced on July 7 that it would sign an investment MOU with Duksan Hi-Metal.

According to the city, Duksan Hi-Metal will invest in expanding the 'micro solder ball' (MSB) production plant on the site of its existing business site in Yeonam-dong, Buk-gu, Ulsan.

KRW 20.6 billion will be invested in expanding the plant.

It is expected to start construction within this month in the scale of total floor area of 4,660 square meters on a site of 14,031 square meters, with its completion scheduled for January next year.

The production line is planned to be established by September 2024.

Duksan Hi-Metal agreed to preferentially hire Ulsan citizens in its micro solder ball production plant and cooperate in creating local jobs.

Ulsan-si is set to provide administrative and financial support to ensure the investment by Duksan H-Metal goes as planned.

Duksan Hi-Metal is an affiliate of the Ulsan's local company Duksan Group. It is the first semiconductor material company established in Ulsan in 1999 and the first startup from Ulsan.

Its main product is solder ball, a key material for advanced packaging in line with the move towards smaller and integrated semiconductors. It is a very small ball-shaped component that connects semiconductor chips and substrates, transmitting electrical signals.

The company is currently ranked 1st the global micro solder ball market, and 2nd in the solder ball market, by successfully localizing the solder ball, which used to be dominated by Japan.

Micro solder ball is an ultra-precision solder ball, and a key material for semiconductor package substrates and 'FC-BGA', which have been in short supply recently.
