According to Yonhap News,

The Ministry of Environment and Ulsan City have agreed to continue their voluntary environmental management agreement with companies, which is designed to dramatically decrease environmental pollutants emitted from Ulsan-based companies.

The ministry, city and 23 companies in the city will conclude the fourth round of voluntary agreement, which focuses on reducing 15 percent of the emission of air pollutants by 2016.

Companies plan to invest a total of 435.8 billion won to cut 6,888 tons of emissions of SOx, NOx and VOC.

The ministry and city signed the first, second and third round of voluntary environmental management agreement with SK Energy, Korea Zinc, Poosan Corporation, S-OIL, Hyundai Motors and Hyundai Heavy Industries, in an attempt to reduce the emission of pollutants.

Ahead of the opening of the World Cup, the ministry and city inked the agreement with 178, 48 and 23 companies in 2000, 2003 and 2006, respectively, which led to the investment of one trillion won from companies to improve air and water environment.

They also organized an evaluation team consisting of the representatives of civic groups and experts to conduct evaluation on companies' achievements in emission reduction and provide companies recording good performances with incentives such as exemption of regular inspection for a certain period of time, granting environmental mileages and recommendation of the companies as environmentally-friendly companies.

"The voluntary agreement was attributable to our dramatic reduction in the emission of pollutants. We believe that our mutual trust has enabled us to successfully create the image of an environmentally-friendly industrial city," said an Ulsan official.
