A medical team led by Jeong Yun-seong, professor of the Department of Laboratory Medicine at Ulsan University Hospital, identified mycobacterium koreense sp. nov. and registered it at the Germany-based World Federation for Culture Collection for the first time in the world.

The team identified the bacterium through conducting special examinations including HPLC method and DNA analysis on infected bacteria, found in patients undergoing clinical trial.

HPLC is a method that analyzes ingredients of a substance, based on a molecular weight graph, with high-pressure and liquefied Chromatography.

The team already detected non-tuberculous mycobacterium through HPLC method and released the study results on distribution and pathogenic rate of non-tuberculous mycobacteria in clinical specimen to the world congress.

The study result was also published in the 2012 International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology.

"I hope the study result would contribute to the diagnosis and treatment of non-tuberculous mycobacteria infection," said professor Jeong.
