Industrial City Ulsan About to Become Hub of Tourism

(ULSAN = Newsis) The city of Ulsan is about to become a hub for tourism as more than 17 million people visited the city of Ulsan last year.

The city announced that a total of 15.22112 million (2011), 16.22517 million (2012) and 17.332735 million (2013) visited Korea’s southeastern city, posting an annual growth rate of six percent every year for last three years.

Ulsan City Tour saw an increase of five percent in the number of visitors from 16,381 in 2012 to 17,186 in 2013.

The city’s active tourism development projects are the main factors that triggered a rapid growth in the number of visitors.

It has carried out various development projects including ecotourism, coast tour, industrial tourism and sightseeing tourism in an effort to vitalize its local tourism industry.

The city set up Yeongnam Alps Mast Plan (four main strategies and 28 projects) and created HaneulUksae-gil and Dulle-gil. It is also constructing integrated welcome center, artificial climbing structure and Sinbulsan ropeway.

In eco and marine tourism sector, the city has worked on a project to develop an international-level marine tourism city in Gangdong region.

In particular, Taehwa River is regarded as one of the best restored river in the nation, drawing enormous number of visitors.

Ulsan, which is a home to many industrial giants including Hyundai Motors, Hyundai Heavy Industries and various petrochemical complexes, has great potential to become a hub for industrial tourism. The city plans to push ahead its development projects to develop various contents for the city’s industrial tourism.

Marking its “Visit Busan-Ulsan-Gyeongnam 2013”, the city selected and carried out a total of 25 projects in six fields to vitalize the city’s tourism industry.

For tourism promotion project, the city organized promotion activities for Yeongnam Alps (four times), Ulsan Hanbok Festival. It also attracted a total of 9,400 business incentive tourists last year.

The city operated 16 tourist information centers (13 in Korea, three in overseas), 29 familiarization tours and carried out projects to develop local tourism resources including the development of Ulsan eco photo zones.

“The tourism industry is considered a new growth engine in 21st century with unlimited potential,” said a city official. “We will continue our effort to develop relevant infrastructure for the industry and transform the city into a new tourism hub.”
