Ulsan Strives to Promote R&D

(ULSAN = Newsis) The city of Ulsan held its science and technology promotion committee at its city hall on February 13 and unveiled its results of 2013 as well as new action plans for 2014.

According to its 2014 plans, the city has set eight key tasks and 88 specific projects including the development of business infrastructure for local-leading research and development (R&D) business projects, enhancement of infrastructure and competence of local R&D planning and management, training of science and technology experts and job creation, strengthening industry-academic-research cooperation and others.

It will invest a total of KRW 194.3 billion to develop R&D infrastructure for the development of electric car and its parts (KRW 23.2 billion), construction of biochemistry commercialization center (KRW 15.3 billion) and low-tech carbon innovative material research center (KRW 14.4 billion).

In order to strengthen industry-academic-research cooperation, the city will construct an industry-academic cluster (KRW 20.4 billion), conduct joint technology development projects (KRW 2.8 billion) and technology transfer promotion networking business project (KRW 400 million).

Also, it will carry out various activities, including support of development fund for the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology, support of operating fund for the University of Ulsan Institute of e-Vehicle Technology, operation of specialized career support center and practical science classes, host of robot competitive exhibitions and other science-related activities.

Meanwhile, in 2013, the city concentrated its efforts to develop R&D infrastructure and new growth engine industries. It carried out the joint-construction of converged high-tech research center and green-car technology center, attracted Ulsan division of the Korea Institute of Energy Research, constructed biochemistry commercialization center and other R&D centers for core industries and technologies.

It also operated an office of policy development for Ulsan Technopark, supported and participated in the International Form on Strategic Technology, fostered the local’s specialized industries in an effort to strengthen industry-academic cooperation.
